Theft, fraud, terrorism, and accidents must all be investigated. Investigation is a complex undertaking; far too often portrayed unrealistically. News and entertainment media tend to grossly oversimplify investigation. The steps involved in proper investigations often go unmentioned. So too do the many organizations involved in the process. Academic programs, texts, and training programs may also provide a myopic perspective.
