Applying water too soon or in excess of crop needs results in inefficient irrigation application. Too often irrigation decisionmakers subscribe to "when in doubt irrigate," rather than scheduling irrigations based on soil moisture monitoring and measured crop need. Another factor leading to inefficient water use is the use-it-or-lose-it perception.
