Davis This study investigates the source and MEANING of the metaphor JESUS IS LIGHT in the GOSPEL of john (GJohn) utilizing Conceptual Metaphor Theory. It argues that JESUS IS LIGHT in GJohn is a complex metaphor which is deeply rooted in the Old Testament metaphor THE PRESENCE OF GOD IS LIGHT and its derivative metaphor THE AGENT OF SALVATION IS LIGHT . Many of the elements of these original metaphors are explicitly or implicitly mapped onto JESUS , showing him to be a personal revelation of God himself to mankind.

The Gospel of John (hereafter GJohn when referring to the book) contains vivid metaphors that depict Jesus and his impact: word, life, bread, water, and light, among others. Scholars have studied these metaphors, seeking for insight into the author (hereafter John or
