Wood Lecturedelivered before the University of Londonon 12 March 1957[ ]When the Dead Sea Scrolls first came to light there was wide divergence of view as tothe date of the composition of the non-Biblical texts which were brought to light, anddates as far apart as the second century and the Middle Ages were Thearchaeologists who excavated the cave from which the Scrolls came declared at firstthat they must have been deposited in the cave not later than circa 100 ,2 and thisinvolved the conclusion that all of the manuscripts must be dated before that time, anda fortiori the composition of the works must be assigned to a date before 100 Theevidence did not seem convincing to all archaeologists,3 and non-archaeologists werenot slow to express their Since then much new evidence has come to light.
