They are included as a means of conveying results and trends in an easily read (and referred to) manner. Therefore, it is very important to construct them effectively. Some general guidelines and tips for figure/table construction: 1) Remember: a reader ought to be able to look at the graphics in your paper and see all of the information needed to follow the reasoning in the body of the text. This means that any original data discussed in the text of a report should be included in a figure and/or table. It is not always necessary to include data taken from a reference in a figure/table (although it is often helpful to do so); it is necessary to reference such data wherever it appears (in the text and in any graphic). 2) Figures/Tables should be explained in the body of the text; do not explain them in the caption. Captions are supposed to be brief, and only include information which is vital to understanding the values displayed (not how the numbers were generated or what they mean).
