White & Sad Ali A new addiction recovery advocacy movement in the United States is challenging many of the concepts and terms that have historically portrayed alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems (Ali, 2010; Kelly, 2004; Substance Use Disorders, 2004; White , 2006, 2007a). Recovery advocates contend that language has been an important tool in the stigmatization, demedicalization, and criminalization of AOD problems and the marginalization of people affected by these problems ( White , 2007b). Recovery advocates are calling attention to new research studies that confirm these effects (Kelly, Dow, & Westerhoff, in press; Kelly & Westerhoff, 2010).
