Hartel and FoegedingThere is considerable confusion about exactly what constitutes a learning outcomeand how (or if) it is distinguished from learning objectives or competencies . Evenin the education literature, the usage of these terms seems contradictory at it is instructive to find definitions in the dictionary. According to theAmerican Heritage Dictionary, the learning terms are defined as follows: Compe-tency: Competence. The state or quality of being competent. Properly or well quali-fied, capable. Objective: Something worked toward or striven for, a goal. outcome :A natural result, definitions leave one unfulfilled when it comes down to the details of writ-ing statements of student learning that can be used for assessment (in this case, weprefer the definition of an objective that relates to the microscope lens closest tothe sample).
