LESSON 7: Guess What Benjamin Franklin Did!
OVERVIEWT hroughout his life, Benjamin Franklin was curious about the world around him and practical-minded in approaching problems. A visit to Franklin s Philadelphia home revealedhis special knack for meeting needs with inventions: guests reported their fascination withsuch gadgets as the chair/stepstool, table/firescreen, and long arm pole for reachingbooks on high shelves. All of Franklin s discoveries and inventions, from his legendary kiteand key experiment to his redesigned fireplaces, arose from his observation-based thinkingand desire to improve daily life. Many of Franklin s creations are still used LESSON illustrates for students the interrelationships among need, observation, andinvention. Students are given facts about the circumstances that led to one of Franklin sinventions and then asked to Guess what he invented.
