Liquid Based MicrobiologyDiagnostic Microbiology involves the collection of a diversity of samples from the patient to determine the etiology of diseases. Samples range from solids, like tissue, semi-solids, like feces, and samples of varying viscosity, such as sputum, pus, aspirates and urine. In addition to this range of different sample consistencies, a large proportion of Microbiology samples are collected on swabs. The diversity of specimen types has always presented a particular challenge for bacteriology laboratories, with samples arriving in containers of varying shapes and sizes that are processed entirely by hand.
