Lorna DOONEby BlackmoreTHE AUTHORR ichard Doddridge Blackmore (1825-1900) was born in Longworth near Oxford. Hisfather was a clergyman, as were the fathers of his father, mother and stepmother, and several ofhis uncles; his great-great-grandfather was the famous minister and hymn-writer Philip Doddridge(O Happy Day), whose family name he bore. The death of his mother shortly after his birth lefthim sensitive to the problems of orphaned children. In his early childhood he was raised by anaunt, but when he reached school age he went to live again with his father and new this period of time the family lived in the regions of Devon and Somerset where hisgreatest novel is set. He even attended Blundell s School, the place where John Ridd supposedlyreceived his education.
