The adversarial process and the high stakes involved in criminal proceedings may affect the likelihood that an individual will distort his or her symptom presentation. In cases where a forensic evaluation is sought, the defendant may be feigning illness to gain admission to a psychiatric hospital, to reduce culpability with an insanity defense, or to seek a more lenient sentence. Self-report information is an important aspect of any psychological evaluation. Mental health professionals often proceed on the assumption that clients will provide an honest and complete description of their symptoms. However, this sort of forthrightness cannot be taken for granted when a referral takes place in a forensic context.
