TS-64 Measurement of the glass transition temperature using Dynamic mechanical AnalysisOne of the most fundamental measurements made onpolymeric materials is the Measurement of the glasstransition, Tg. In general, transitions in materials areassociated with different localized or medium-to long-rangecooperative motions of molecular segments. The glasstransition is associated with cooperative motion among alarge number of chain segments, including those fromneighboring polymer Although there are severalthermal techniques available to make Tg measurements, byfar the most sensitive technique is dynamic mechanicalanalysis, DMA. DMA measures the viscoelastic moduli, storage and loss modulus, damping properties, and tandelta, of materials as they are deformed under a period(sinusoidal) deformation (stress or strain). After scanning the sample under test, any of these threeviscoelastic parameters can be used to define the Tg. Thefigure above shows a scan of a pressure sensitive adhesiverun in tension clamps, at a frequency of 1 Hz, an amplitudeof 10 microns, and a ramp rate of 5 C/min.
