Previously, laboratories usually reported uncertainty as the standard deviation calculated from data for an internal control sample. The measurement uncertainty also taking into account method and laboratory bias and using a coverage factor of 2, can give uncertainty values which may be a factor of 2 to 5 times higher than previously (Figure 1).
