While gardeners may not be familiar with the term hydrogel, nearly everyone who has worried about watering plants has heard about watering crystals or water retention granules. Th e ability of these synthetic polymers to absorb water and selectively bind to other substances has led to their use as soil stabilizers, water purifi ers, juice clarifi ers, animal feed thickeners, and in the pro-cessing of oil, pulp and paper, and fruits and vegetables. Moreover, they are widely used in cosmetics and other personal products, and have medical application in tissue augmentation (see Polyacrylamides up close and very personal ).
