Foreword One in three Australian women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15. Almost one in five have experienced sexual violence . It is time for that to change. The National plan to Reduce violence against women and their children 2010 2022 (the National plan ) brings together the efforts of governments across the nation to make a real and sustained reduction in the levels of violence against women . It is the first plan to coordinate action across jurisdictions. It is the first to focus strongly on prevention. It is the first to look to the long term, building respectful relationships and working to increase gender equality to prevent violence from occurring in the first place. It is the first to focus on holding perpetrators accountable and encourage behaviour change. The National plan sets out a framework for action over the next 12 years. This plan shows Australia s commitments to upholding the hu man rights of Australian women through the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against women , the Declaration to End violence Against women and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for action .
