In addition to its wide use in labora-tory research, real - time RT-PCR has the potential for broad application in the diagnoses of functional defects in disease. The absolute quantification of mRNA is generally impractical and unnecessary because constantly transcribed housekeeping genes ef-fectively serve as internal standards for the relative quantification of the transcripts of genes of interest (1 5).
