Meningococci are isolated from the nasopharynx of up to 30% of healthy individuals and may be classified as commensals of the human respiratory tract. Meningococci elaborate adhesins such as pili and outer-membrane opacity proteins that may aid in anchorage to mucosal cells, specific nutrient acquisition factors ( iron-binding proteins) and capsule that protects against desiccation. Capsule and LPS sialylation and perhaps IgA protease also aid in evasion of host immune mechanisms (1). Under some situations, meningococci cause serious conditions which can be fatal.
