A laser is used to photoexcite electrons in a GaAssemiconductor and when they spontaneously de-excite they emit luminescence. The luminescence isanalyzed with a spectrometer and the peaks in the spectra represent a direct measure of the energy levelsin the is a popular and useful semiconductor material.
