Pressure Testing of pipelines shouldnormally be carried out usingwater. Only in exceptionalcircumstances should pneumaticpressure Testing using compressed inertgas or air be used, and then only undercarefully controlled conditions. Thereason for this is because water isvirtually incompressible (as are otherliquids) and only a small quantity ofenergy needs to be introduced toincrease the Pressure significantly. Air,however, (like all gases) is compressibleand, as a result, much more energy has tobe put into the gas to raise its fact, at the Pressure ranges normallyused for Testing water- Piping Systems 200times more energy is stored incompressed gas compared to water atthe same Pressure and volume. So,should a joint, pipe, or any othercomponent fail under test pressurewhen using compressed gas, the energycan be released with deadly force!
