The Act was designed to use the purchasing power of the Federal government to create opportunities for workers who were blind. In 1971, Senator Jacob Javits championed a revision of the Act that included people with other disabilities, while adding services to the products already covered by the Wagner-O Day Act. In 2006, the Javits-Wagner-O Day Program was renamed the AbilityOne TodayToday, AbilityOne is managed by The Commission, an independent federal agency, with assistance from National Industries for the Blind (NIB), and SourceAmerica (formerly National Industries for the Severely Handicapped) in the implementation and execution of the of the JWOD Act, more than 600 associated non-profit agencies around the country have generated more than 48,000 jobs for Americans who are blind or have other severe disabilities through the delivery of products and services to the federal government.
