reading : A PsycholinguisticGuessing GameKenneth S. GoodmanAs scientific understanding develops in any field of study, preexisting,naive, common sense notions must give way. Such outmoded beliefs clut-ter the literature dealing with the process of reading . They interfere withthe application of modern scientific concepts of language and thought to researchin reading . They confuse the attempts at application of such concepts to solutionof problems involved in the teaching and learning of reading . The very fact thatsuch naive beliefs are based on common sense explains their persistent and re-current nature. To the casual and unsophisticated observer they appear to explain,even predict, a set of phenomena in reading .

More simply stated, reading is a psycholinguistic guessing game. It in-volves an interaction between thought and language. Efficient reading does not result from precise perception and identification of all elements, but from skill in selecting the fewest, most productive cues necessary to produce guesses which are right the first time.
