151 RIGHTS TO SOCIAL SECURITY AND ASSISTANCE Linda Jansen van Rensburg Lucie Lamarche 1 INTRODUCTION Section 27(1)(c) of the South African Constitution1 provides that everyone has the right to have access to SOCIAL SECURITY , including, if they are unable to support themselves and their dependants, appropriate SOCIAL ASSISTANCE . Section 27(2) in turn requires the state to take reasonable legislative and other measures, within its available resources, to achieve the progressive realisation of this right. Section 28(1)(c) further grants every child the right to basic SOCIAL services. In this chapter we describe and analyse these RIGHTS . First, we describe the two foundational terms SOCIAL SECURITY and SOCIAL ASSISTANCE .
