42 January - 2016 Odisha ReviewWomen are the gift to the society. During ancientperiod of India , Women played a significant Rig Vedic Women in India enjoyed high statusin society. Their condition was good. The womenwere provided opportunity to attain highintellectual and spiritual standard. There weremany Women Rishis during this period. Thoughmonogamy was mostly common, the richersection of the society indulged in polygamy. Therewas no sati system or early marriage. Butfrom enjoying free and esteemed positions in theRig-Vedic society, Women started beingdiscriminated against since the Later-Vedic periodin education and other rights and facilities. Childmarriage, widow burning, the purdah andpolygamy further worsened the Women s epics and Puranas equated womenwith property. Even Buddhism did little forwomen. Though the Maurya kings oftenemployed female bodyguards, spies and Stri-adhyaksha mahamatras , their status was still quitebad.
Ancient Women and Education: There are some bright exceptions in this dismal picture. The role of women in Ancient Indian Literature is immense.
