Childmarriage, widow burning, the purdah andpolygamy further worsened the Women s epics and Puranas equated womenwith property. Even Buddhism did little forwomen. Though the Maurya kings oftenemployed female bodyguards, spies and Stri-adhyaksha mahamatras , their status was still quitebad.
