SPT vs Friction Angle - Caltrans

Caltrans Geotechnical Manual Page 1 of 5 March 2014 SOIL CORRELATIONS Introduction This section of the Geotechnical Manual presents the SPT correlations to be used for Friction Angle (phi Angle ) and unit weight. The correlations use Standard Penetration Test (N) values corrected for overburden and hammer efficiency (N160). Usage of correlations for geotechnical design is addressed in the various design sections of the Geotechnical Manual. Other correlations, CPT correlations and shear wave velocity correlations are found elsewhere in the Geotechnical Manual. The correlations presented herein are after Bowles (1977), which is consistent with many of the NHI manuals used by the Department.
