It was issued by the standards Council on July 18, 2003, with an effective date of August 7, 2003, and supersedes all previous editions. The initial discussion and mandatory Medical requirements were contained in NFPA 1001. In the late 1980s, respective members of the 1001 and 1500 technical committees formed a working subcommittee to develop a new Standard , NFPA 1582.
