Background: Each year, chronic diseases account for 70% of all deaths in the United States. Poor diets and lack of physical activity lead to chronic illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. To further explain the pervasiveness, 6 in 10 adults in the United States have a chronic disease and 4 in 10 adults have two or more. The prevalence of chronic disease varies greatly across the country with a higher concentration in the Mid-South region. Evidence suggests that the high prevalence of chronic disease may be partially responsible for the devastating effects of the current coronavirus Furthermore, the economic consequences of the pandemic have made it even more difficult for the United States to afford the growing HEALTH care costs that result from chronic disease. Those with chronic disease and their families face both direct and indirect costs: Direct costs primarily stem from longer and more frequent hospital visits and greater prescription drug use, while indirect costs arise from lost education and job opportunities.
