STUDENT How to figure outdiversity in adversity

While the connected load is fairly straightforward todetermine, the assessment of the maximum demandrequires considerable experience and skill on the partof the installation designer. To decide not to apply anydiversity would be safe and it would be easy. But itwould not be practical. Consider for example, a 30 A or 32 A ring finalcircuit with 20 x 13 A socket-outlets, each capable ofsupplying 3 kW at 230 V. With no diversity applied, wewould have to allow 60 kW (about 260 A) for this ringcircuit alone! Economic design of an electrical installationmeans that diversity almost always has to be the application of diversity, certain assumptionshave to be made regarding the actual current drawnby items of equipment. Guidance on the currentdemand to be assumed for commonly usedequipment and also on the application of allowancefor diversity is given in Appendix 1 of the IEE On-SiteGuide (OSG) and Appendix H of IEE GuidanceNote 1, Selection and Erection (GN1).
