With most high performance adhesives this step is critical, since for good wetting, the adherend should have a higher Surface tension than the adhesive. Even a thumbprint on an otherwise clean Surface can prevent the adhesive from spontaneously wetting and spreading. Organic contaminants are removed by degreasing, while loose deposits are dislodged by scraping or washing with acids, alkali solutions or other such chemicals.
