1 Taking the Human Out of the Loop: A Review of Bayesian OptimizationBobak Shahriari, Kevin Swersky, Ziyu Wang, Ryan P. Adams and Nando de FreitasAbstract Big data applications are typically associated withsystems involving large numbers of users, massive complexsoftware systems, and large-scale heterogeneous computing andstorage architectures. The construction of such systems involvesmany distributed design choices. The end products ( , rec-ommendation systems, medical analysis tools, real-time gameengines, speech recognizers) thus involves many tunable config-uration parameters. These parameters are often specified andhard-coded into the software by various developers or optimized jointly, these parameters can result in significantimprovements. Bayesian optimization is a powerful tool forthe joint optimization of design choices that is gaining greatpopularity in recent years.
