Tea is Dumped The colonist boycott of British goods, especially that of tea, had greatly diminished the profits of the British East India Company. By 1773, the company needed to sell millions of pounds of its tea or go broke. In an attempt to rescue the company, the British government actually lowered the cost of tea so that colonists would buy it.
