While the Organic Farming Scheme has been important in facilitating this growth, enhancing the underlining profitability of the system will be vital if this is to be maintained. Teagasc has a role in promoting Organic Farming but this only makes sense if it is profitable for all beef farmers , Organic farmers are dependent on the market to deliver a return.
1,800 farmers now farming organically including approximately 600 who entered conversion in 2015. About 70% of organic farmers are cattle farmers. Organically managed land now occupies approximately 2% of the total utilizable agricultural area (UAA) in the country, which is over a doubling in area compared to the previous decade.
