April 200437By Brian V. Cake, KF2 YNWhen I moved to my new homeon the coast of northeastFlorida, it was into a deed-re-stricted community, where unsightly an-tennas were forbidden. I enjoy occasionaloperation on the HF bands (principally14 MHz and above) and the location wasjust begging for the use of Vertical anten-nas, where the proximity to the waterwould help with good low radiation verticals could be hidden in the upperdeck support structure and everybodywould be happy, including my , the old saw about verti-cal antennas radiating equally poorly in alldirections has a lot of truth to it and lossesin the Ground system can eat up much ofyour power. I made the mistake of attempt-ing to measure the Ground conductivity inmy backyard. That was after I comparedthe on-air performance of a Vertical half-wave dipole for 10 meters with a simplequarter-wave Vertical with no radials.
April 2004 39 atmosphere for even a short while. Also note that the balun choke reactance will change the resonant frequency of the an-tenna somewhat.
