1 The Comparison between qualitative , quantitative , and Single subject design A Paper presented by Dr. Bander N. Alotaibi 2 Introduction The historical importance of qualitative and quantitative designs is partially illustrated by their longevity. Hammersley (1992) has noted that debates about the two methods have roots in the mid-nineteenth century and occurred in sociology in the 1920s and 1930s. Recent attention to the debate started with a revival of the fortunes of qualitative research methods in the 1960s in sociology and psychology, which had been dominated by quantitative methods throughout the 1940s and the 1950s (Hammersley,1992).
