THE Constitution IN plain english The Constitution consists of a preamble, 7 articles, and 27 amendments. The preamble explains why it was written. The seven articles lay out the three branches of government and the rules they have to follow, and the basic way the government will operate. The 27 amendments guarantee the rights of the people and give more specific rules under which the government will operate. The Preamble We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. The Preamble to the United States Constitution is a brief introductory statement of the fundamental purposes and guiding principles which the Constitution is meant to serve. It expresses in general terms the intentions of its authors, and is sometimes referred to by courts as evidence of what the Founding Fathers thought the Constitution meant and what they hoped it would achieve (especially as compared with the Articles of Confederation).
