The main purpose of this book is to serve as abasis for reflection on the DIALOGUE BETWEEN theEastern orthodox Churches (the four ancient Patriarchates of Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalemand Constantinople, that of Georgia and Patriar-chates founded later in Russia, Serbia, Bulgariaand Romania, as well as some autocephalous andautonomous Churches) and Oriental OrthodoxChurches (of the Coptic, Armenian, Ethiopian andSyriac traditions), with unofficial DIALOGUE since1964 and official DIALOGUE since 1985. The breachbegan with a theological controversy concerningthe relation BETWEEN the human and divine naturesin Christ centred on the expression two natures(physeis) in one Person , a new Christological for-mula adopted at the Council of Chalcedon (451).As agreed at Chamb sy (Geneva) in November1993, we can state that: Both families have always loyally maintained the authentic OrthodoxChristological faith, and the unbroken continuityof the apostolic tradition, though they may haveused Christological terms in different ways.
