Aftergraduating from University College in Nottingham, he worked as aschoolmaster in a London suburb and wrote fiction and poetry that in-troduced the themes of nature and the unconscious that pervaded hislater work. His short stories began to be published in 1909. After hisfirst novel, The White Peacock(1911), was published with the help ofthe writer Ford Madox Ford, Lawrence was forced by illness to returnto Nottingham, where he fell in love with Frieda von Richthofen Week-ley, the German wife of a professor at the college.
