Margaret M Clark Visiting Professor, Newman College of Higher Education, Birmingham A summary of the rose Report , Independent Review of the Teaching of early Reading: final Report , appeared in Education Journal (Issue 94 2006, ) under the heading Phonics Final Report . In the same issue, in an article by Colin Richards entitled, This could be the end of teacher autonomy , Professor Richards comments: Well in a few months time teachers of young children could be required to teach initial reading through synthetic phonics a method not dissimilar to those used in Victorian classrooms.
