Lord Curzon's unpopular decision to partition the province of Bengal in 1905, led to this popular Movement , which was organized around the effective use of Swadeshi ' and boycott' as methods of agitation, under Extremist leadership.

Bengal Chemicals started in 1893, and Rabindranath Tagore’s Swadeshi Bhandar in 1897. But after 1905, swadeshi was popularized with a new energy and sense of purpose. Volunteer organizations or samitis would promote swadeshi sales through shops, exhibitions along the lines of the traditional Hindu mela and cost -price hawking.
