The first inhabitants of respectable gentleman, lawyers and prosperous tradesmen were succeeded in the mid 1700s by ironmongers, woodcarvers, straw hat manufacturers, pork butchers, watch repairers, wig makers, book sellers and several public houses. The cobbled streets and laneways also became home to the capital s most infamous gin houses and drinking establishments.
