We will use expressions in the extended relational algebra (see section 5.2 in the book) interpreted over sets as logical query plans. Provisio To exclude ambiguities, we will assume without loss of generality in what follows that all occurrences of relation symbols in a SQL statement are assigned a distinct name through the alias mechanism of SQL.
