1 Transportation FOR Students WITH DISABILITIES AND Special HEALTH CARE NEEDS 2 Page Intentionally Left Blank 3 Transportation FOR Students WITH DISABILITIES AND Special HEALTH CARE NEEDS The purpose of this section is to recommend standard policies, procedures and guidelines for persons entrusted with the responsibility of managing Transportation for Students with disabilities. The term Special education means, specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability. When Transportation is required to provide access to such instruction, it is considered a related service. As part of the mandate of a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), related services are required when determined necessary to assist a child with a disability to benefit from Special education.
transportation staff, as related service providers, must be included in the IEP process to address safety and feasibility of various transportation options. The safe transportation of a child with special needs requires a plan that considers and adapts the transportation services to the individual needs of the student.
