In India, however, they are overexploited and neglected. Waterbodies are an important part of urban ecosystems. They perform significant environmental, social and economic functions—recharging groundwater to act as sponges, supporting biodiversity and providing livelihoods. In urban India, however, the number of waterbodies is declining rapidly.
