Phonics tells you how words are pronounced, but it is not much help in understanding a word through context or by remembering that parts of words contain smaller, sometimes more specific, sometimes more flexible meanings. Through learning root words , suffixes and prefixes , you can give yourself a code book that not only helps you navigate around English, but at times, also languages derived from Greek, Roman, and German.
