gas furnaces are typically more efficient than oil furnaces, which in turn are often more efficient than coal furnaces. The reason for this is that it is easiest to burn the gas completely within the furnace, and it is most difficult to burn coal. In other words, the largest part of the chemical energy of the gas ends up as useful heat in our home.
