the upper limit of cognitive functioning continues to increase beyond what Piaget called formal operations (Inhelder & Piaget, 1955/1958; Piaget, 1975, 1983). Thus, adults can solve much more abstract and complicated cognitive tasks than children, even while they also can use low level skills similar to those of children.
