Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) • Urea is formed in the liver as the end product of protein metabolism and is transported to the kidneys for excretion. • Nearly all renal diseases can cause an inadequate excretion of urea, which causes the blood concentration to rise above normal (thus an elevated BUN).
