Fitting Linear Mixed-Effects Models using lme4
paper we describe the formulation and representation of linear mixed models. The techniques used for generalized linear and nonlinear mixed models will be described separately, in a future paper. At present, the main alternative to lme4 for mixed modeling in R is the nlme package (Pin-heiro, Bates, DebRoy, Sarkar, and R Core Team 2014).

www-personal.umich.educlasses of models, as well as differences in the R software, can be clearly delin-eated. LMMs, which are the main focus of the book, are also illustrated using three additional datasets, which extend the presentation of various aspects of the models and R functions. We have decided to include the direct output of R commands in the text.
