While learning addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts, for instance, students learn about the properties of these operations to facilitate mastery. They apply the commutative property of addition and multiplication, for example, when they discover that 3 + 7 is the same as 7 + 3 or that 3 x 7 = 7 x 3.
