1. Aspects of Multivariate Analysis Multivariate data arise whenever p ‚ 1 variables are recorded. Values of these variables are observed for n distinct item, individuals, or experimental trials. We use the notation xij to indicate the particular value of the ith variable that is observed on the jth item, or trial. Thus, n measurements on p variables are displayed as p£n random matrix X:
