Natural Gas Leak Detection in Pipelines
Since methane is much lighter than air, the density difference provides a signature that can be used as an indicator of a potential leak. Backscatter imaging utilizes a carbon-dioxide laser to illuminate the area above the pipeline. The natural gas scatters the laser light very strongly.
